The World Cup has reached the knockout stage, which means losing is suddenly everywhere. In the groups you can have a bad night and still go through. Not now. One weak moment, one missed penalty, one loose pass at the wrong time, and your tournament is over. Every match sends someone home. Half the story of the next few weeks will be about defeat, and the cameras will find the players who caused it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia felt it last week. A Round of 32 tie against Egypt in Dallas, level at 1-1 after 120 minutes, then gone on penalties. Harry Souttar missed. So did Lucas Herrington, who is eighteen. Jackson Irvine was in tears and still turned first to the two players who had missed, asking everyone to stay behind them. Tony Popovic said he was proud of his group.<\/a> It was a good way to lose. But the miss is not the part I am interested in. The part I am interested in is what those players do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most revealing moment in football is not the error. It is the sixty seconds after it.<\/mark><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Watch a player who has just given the ball away in a dangerous area. Some of them shrink. They stop showing for the pass. They drift to the safe side of the pitch and only take the ball when there is no risk attached to it. Some go the other way. They try to win the game back on their own, force a pass that is not on, over-commit to a tackle, and hand the moment straight back. Both responses are the same thing wearing different clothes. The player has let the mistake change how he plays.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This matters more than it looks, because a player’s response to a mistake protects or destroys the very thing that makes him valuable. The reason you sign a creative midfielder is his willingness to attempt the pass that can lose you the ball. That willingness is the whole point of him. If one giveaway turns him cautious, you have lost the player you signed and kept a passenger. The brave defender who suddenly refuses to step up the pitch is no longer a brave defender. Bouncing back, in football, is really about refusing to let a mistake shrink your game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see it at every level. My own side has hit a rough patch, unbeaten in ten and then two losses and a draw. The same picture appears. One lad tries to win it single-handed and gives it away. Another loses his head and collects a caution. A couple go quiet and hope the ball falls to someone else. And a few keep passing, keep going in for tackles, keep playing exactly as they did when we were winning. They are not the loudest or the most gifted. They are the ones I would build a side around, because their game does not move when the scoreboard does.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

That is the psychology the knockouts put under a microscope. Herrington is eighteen and missed on the biggest stage there is. The miss tells me almost nothing. What will tell me everything is whether he asks for the ball in the next match, and the one after that, and whether he steps up to take the next penalty when it comes. A player is not defined by the error. He is defined by the ball after it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
